Renowned singer-songwriter IU (아이유) has been the talk of the town lately, especially after the success of her Netflix series, “When Life Gives You Tangerines (폭싹 속았수다)”. Unfortunately, the starlet was also recently dragged into online conspiracies, which many think is a cover-up for Kim Soohyun (김수현).
Recently, South Korean internet forum users have shared several posts regarding IU. The posts suggest that the singer, whose real name is Lee Jieun (이지은), is involved in some serious crimes, including coercion and assault. There are also accusations that the 31-year-old was a spy working for the Chinese government. Most shockingly, some forum users even alleged that IU had a part in the kidnapping and murder of a woman.

In addition to the conspiracy theories, IU faced backlash after news outlets exposed her alleged connections to Kim Soohyun and his controversial movie, “Real”. According to reports, IU was initially considered for the female lead role. After she turned down the offer, the role later went to the late singer Sulli (설리). Unfortunately, Sulli’s brother, Choi Daehee, recently revealed that the role had negatively affected the star’s mental health and eventually drove her to take her own life in 2019.
Choi Daehee also claimed that IU introduced Sulli, Goo Hara (구하라) and Kim Saeron (김새론) to a psychiatrist during their struggles with mental health. While it didn’t seem that the revelation was to drag IU’s name, it fueled allegations that IU had an indirect link to the deaths of the three female stars. Many also brought up her long-standing friendship with Kim Soohyun, noting her uncharacteristic silence on his recent scandal.

Many netizens have since reacted to these rumours, mostly trashing the claims and calling it an unnecessary witch hunt. However, many also believed the sudden slew of posts might be the work of Kim Soohyun and his agency, arguing that they’re using IU to distract the public from his scandal. On the other hand, some fans are calling for IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, to take action against the rumours.
It’s worth noting that every claim against IU has little to no proof. Regardless, we hope the star and her agency will take action against these claims. What are your thoughts on this?
