Regardless of whether someone is born into royalty or not, it doesn’t necessarily mean they can get away from being disciplined by teachers at school. Who would have thought that the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah, was reprimanded by a strict teacher during her time in secondary school?
The former Queen of Malaysia recently attended the World Quran Hour programme at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Gombak, when she recognised someone familiar from her childhood. The person turned out to be her former home science teacher, whom she described as being very strict in the past.
Videos of the heartwarming reunion outside the event’s venue were then shared on social media. In the video, Tunku Azizah can be heard saying to her former educator, Raja Norshiah, “You were so strict. You made me scrub the floor every day. You wouldn’t let me cook if I weren’t wearing an apron during class.” She then suggested they take a photo together before reminiscing about old times at Sekolah Menengah Tun Fatimah, Johor.
At one point, while telling the story, Her Majesty recalled her younger self thinking, “How dare this teacher ask the Sultan’s granddaughter to scrub the floor,” which had both the crowd and the teacher laughing. She then thanked Raja Norshiah for being the way she was, as she had learned a lot in her adulthood, especially when it came to managing her home.
The joyful reunion went viral, with netizens mostly amused by Tunku Azizah’s “complaints” about her former strict teacher. Others praised her for being humble, as she did her chores as instructed back then, despite being the granddaughter of a Sultan. Some found it hard to imagine that someone of royal status would even be disciplined by a teacher. A few also praised Raja Norshiah for not caring whether someone was royalty or not when it came to disciplining her students.
