After the success of her comeback single “Angkat”, local rapper-singer Mimifly went viral once again with the release of her first Raya song, “Serumpun”. The song and music video received an overwhelming response from fans, with many praising the track, visuals, and the incorporation of sign language in the choreography.
We had the opportunity to speak with the artist about the creative process behind “Serumpun” and she even shared her favourite moment during filming. Check out our interview below:
1. The location for the music video appears to be the same as the one in “Angkat”. Were the two videos filmed around the same time?
Yes, both music videos were filmed at the same location, though not around the same time. We decided to return with a bigger production and more talent. It was a two-day shoot, and the schedule was a bit rushed, but we managed to create something amazing.
2. What was the creative process behind making the song “Serumpun”?
The idea for Serumpun came after the release of “Angkat”. Given the single’s success and the overwhelming response, I felt inspired and motivated to release another song. I’ve always wanted to create a Raya track, so why not now, right? We recorded the track at the end of February and filmed the music video in early March.
3. The song has received overwhelming praise, but there has also been criticism that the MV doesn’t accurately represent Hari Raya. Do you have any comments on this?
Everyone interprets art differently, and my work is no exception. As an artist, I welcome both positive and negative feedback. If you consider “Serumpun” a Raya song, then it is a Raya song—and if you don’t, that’s fine too. My team and I appreciate all criticism and feedback because our goal is to keep improving, produce high-quality music, and share my message with the world.
4. Some have speculated that you sampled the Hindi song “Kaliyon Ka Chaman”. Is this true, or is it merely a coincidence that the melodies share similarities?
Oh my God, it was purely coincidental [laughs]. Actually, while we were writing the song, we did feel that the chorus sounded familiar. The two may sound similar, but they’re definitely not the same. If you listen closely, the progression and syncopation placement are different. Plus, when it comes to songwriting, it’s impossible to create a 100% original melody when there are only twelve notes on the scale.
5. Like your previous MV, it seems you’ve incorporated sign language in “Serumpun” as well. Do you plan to continue this in future MVs?
Sign language has become an important part of my life. I really enjoy the process of learning sign language to interpret my songs and incorporating it into my choreography. So yes, I would love to continue doing this for future projects. I want everyone to grow with me and learn sign language so we can break down boundaries and barriers when it comes to communicating with those with hearing impairments. I hope we can all value sign language and improve as a community.
6. What was the most memorable moment during filming? Are there any behind-the-scenes secrets or bloopers you’d like to share?
I absolutely loved every second of making “Serumpun”, both the track and the music video. The creative process and experience mean more to me than external validation. One of my favourite moments during filming was when everyone enjoyed my mother’s cooking. Since we filmed the video during Ramadan, the whole team got to savour her dishes for Iftar. During the two-day shoot, everyone lined up eagerly to see what she had prepared for them.
