Think IOI City Mall can’t get any bigger? Well, think again! The Putrajaya shopping mall has recently announced that it will begin construction for its Phase 3 expansion next month.
IOI City Mall announced the plans on its social media pages, notifying shoppers about road closures around the mall to facilitate the earthworks for the construction of Phase 3. According to the notice, certain roads will be temporarily closed starting 28 February 2025 (Friday). Shoppers are encouraged to follow the alternative routes to reduce congestion when entering or leaving the mall.

IOI City Mall had a Phase 3 extension in its plans for years and is even looking to expand into Phase 4. In a previous interview, IOI Properties Group Sdn Bhd CEO Lee Yeow Seng revealed that the plans for Phase 4 include a purpose-built concert hall and a 10-acre central park. The mall currently has over 650 tenants and various facilities, including an exhibition hall and an Olympic-sized ice-skating rink.
As of writing, there aren’t many details about Phase 3 or what will be available. However, many netizens have shared their reactions to the plans. Unsurprisingly, there were many jokes, including that the mall would continue to expand and create one large mall that reaches nearby Kajang and Semenyih. Others joke that the mall’s management is trying to encourage shoppers to get their 10,000 daily steps through shopping.

On the other hand, netizens lamented the mall’s expansion. Many argued that IOI City Mall should prioritise improving its features, like its prayer rooms and parking, and its accessibility via public transportation before expanding. Others deemed the expansion unnecessary, saying the mall is already big enough. Some also noted that the expansion will only add to the congestion in the area.
There are no details on when Phase 3 is estimated to open, but what are your thoughts on this? Are you excited about IOI City Mall Phase 3?
