Green is the new black! The Green Day Battle of the Bands event, held over the weekend, was an intense competition showcasing the amazing musical talent of local bands. Organised by Warner Music Malaysia and held at the Drum Asia Live venue in Hartamas, the contest saw over 80 Green Day fans come together to support local artists and celebrate the legendary US rock band.

Johny23 emerged as the champion of the night, delivering a thrilling performance of “American Idiot,” a track that transported the crowd back to the heart of Green Day’s revolutionary sound. The band’s expert execution earned them first place, securing tickets to see Green Day live in concert on 18th February 2025, at the National Stadium Hockey in Kuala Lumpur.

According to the winner, they’ve participated in Warner Music Malaysia’s Green Day Battle Of The Bands twice. “We placed third in 2004, and 21 years later, we are CHAMPIONS in 2025! This journey has been incredible! This sweet victory is more than just a trophy, it is a testament to never giving up on what you love.”

In second place was The Other Cousin, which did a unique rendition of “21 Guns.” The band’s creative spin on the classic hit made the audience enjoy their performance tremendously. Brain Stew claimed third place with their heartfelt cover of same track – the band’s powerful performance left a lasting impression on both the judges and the crowd.

The competition’s judges comprised renowned industry professionals: Mike, A&R Manager at Warner Music Malaysia, Shaq from the band Kyoto Protocol, and Iskandar from Insomniacks. Their expertise helped determine the winner in an event that celebrated the best of Green Day’s discography.

Ultimately, the event highlighted emerging Malaysian musicians, providing them with valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals.

Official radio partners for Green Day’s Battle Of The Bands, Mix and Hitz, created awareness for the event and gave the participating amateur musicians a platform to elevate their profile and performance.
