Chinese New Year may have officially ended, but CNY movies are still thriving at the box office and reaching new highs with ticket sales. In fact, one movie in particular just broke a years-long record!

Recently, local cinemas shared that the CNY comedy, “Close Ur Kopitiam (关你茶室)”, has grossed a whopping RM10 million in ticket sales. With this new achievement, the movie is now the top-grossing CNY 2025 movie in Malaysia. The movie by local content group DISSY (低清) and Singaporean actor Mark Lee (李国煌) is also the highest-grossing Malaysian Chinese movie in nine years. Mark Lee also revealed the film will soon be screened internationally to celebrate its success.

Coming in as the second highest-grossing CNY movie for 2025 is “Money Games (半斤百两)”. The Malaysian-Hong Kong joint production by Jack Lim (林德荣) and Eric Tsang (曾志偉) recently reached RM7.57 million in ticket sales. The movie also marked a personal best for producer Jack Lim as it has surpassed the sales for his two top-grossing films, “Ah Beng The Movie: Three Wishes (阿炳心想事成)” and “All In (扑克王者)”, which made RM7.55 million and RM7.14 million respectively.

Chinese epic fantasy “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force (封神第二部:战火西岐)” also continues to showcase its popularity amongst local moviegoers. While not a CNY movie per se, the film has earned over RM7.2 million at the box office, making it the third best-selling Chinese movie released on the Lunar New Year week. Sitting comfortably in fourth place is Singaporean comedy “I Want to Be Boss (AI拼才会赢)”, which recently exceeded RM4 million in ticket sales.

Completing the top five is the Chinese buddy film, “Detective Chinatown 1900 (唐探1900)”, which has since grossed RM3 million in ticket sales. While “OMG! Mom’s Big News (OMG!阿妈有喜)” failed to make it into the top five, it did hit a personal best in ticket sales, grossing RM2 million. On the other hand, Hong Kong’s “Hit & Fun (临时决斗)” and “Queen of Mahjong (麻雀女王追男仔)” both passed the RM1 million threshold, making RM1.325 million and RM1.2 million respectively.

Congratulations to all these CNY movies on their incredible achievements! All of these films are still screening in cinemas nationwide, so do check them out if you haven’t.
