Some bands create music. Alir, crafts worlds.
Hailing from Bandung, this cinematic pop band isn’t just about melodies and lyrics – they weave entire atmospheres, stories, and emotions into their sound. Alir’s music is defined by lush soundscapes, layered compositions, and a deep sense of narrative, often resembling the structure of a film soundtrack more than a traditional album. Their ability to blend vulnerability with grandeur gives their tracks an immersive quality, pulling listeners into an emotional and cinematic listening journey.
I first discovered Alir, during Freedom A(r)t Home Fest in 2021, a fully online art festival my friends and I organised during a time when the world felt frozen. Amid the lineup of incredible acts, Alir, stood out to me, and from that moment on, I was hooked. Their performance had this quiet yet undeniable presence – a way of captivating the audience and making you stop and listen. Since then, their music has never really left me.
Alir, is a band that truly deserves a shoutout. Their cinematic approach to pop music deserves more recognition, and I can’t help but feel like they’re still flying under the radar for many.
Their early works, like the “Penantian” and “Entitas Ketiga” EPs, laid the foundation for their signature style – lyrical storytelling paired with intricate compositions. Then came “Cornucopia”, a six-track album that solidified their ability to blend vulnerability with grandeur. For me, two songs stand out as personal favorites: “Bahtera”, which mirrors the ebb and flow of life, and “Sekeloa” which captures the essence of a place through sound alone.
But Alir,’s evolution didn’t stop there. They continued to explore new sonic landscapes, releasing singles like “Di Penghujung Badai” for the film “Podol!”. This track exemplifies their ability to adapt their sound to different mediums while staying true to their core, emotional storytelling.
If you haven’t yet ventured into Alir,’s universe, now is the perfect time. Their music invites you to explore themes of longing, connection, and introspection, and each track offers something new to discover. Check out their latest single “Semboja”, and let yourself fall into the stories they’ve built.
