After having a controversial start to its launch with a “cracked” glass panel, i-City’s SkyCity is once again facing backlash for the legitimacy of the ride’s safety. The ride was first opened to the public on 18th January 2025 (Saturday), where it was set to be one of the best attractions in Shah Alam as Malaysia’s first and tallest water glass slide.

However, SkyCity’s failure to demonstrate appropriate safety conduct for its waterslide is rapidly casting a negative light on itself. Just yesterday (30th January 2025), a video blew up on TikTok where an inflatable boat that was used to go down the ride fell to the ground while being transported back to the top.

In the 14-second clip posted by TikTok user @/mierull_fpv2, we can see a dropped floatie on the ground. It then hit an innocent passerby, and she allegedly sustained injuries due to the impact. Thankfully, the woman didn’t have to be hospitalised. According to reports, i-City’s SkyCity project was never approved by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) for operations. Rather, the attraction was issued a fine by local authorities on 14th November 2024, when it was still in construction.

It was also discovered that the ride didn’t have a temporary permit nor did it submit a planning permission application. Netizens gathered in the user’s comment section to share their concerns and thoughts. Some were worried about their safety, while others stepped in to clear the air and explain that the inflatable boat was empty, meaning the ride itself wasn’t as dangerous as people had thought.

As of now, SkyCity has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident. Because the safety of this ride is being questioned for legitimacy, practice with caution if you intend to visit this attraction soon. We hope everyone who visits this park returns safely as well. What do you think about this?

Update (3rd February):

Tourism Selangor acknowledges the recent incident at SkyCity Theme Park with the official statement by Dato’ Ng Suee Lim, Selangor’s State Executive Councillor for Local Government and Tourism: “The Selangor State Government fully supports and entrusts local authorities to take necessary action and ensure that all tourism operators comply with the established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). SkyCity is also advised to implement improvements and enhance safety protocols before resuming operations.”

Meanwhile, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari, Chief Minister of Selangor, also stated that the state government will summon the theme park’s management, and operations will be immediately suspended until the operator meets the required safety specifications set by MBSA. The Selangor State Government will also reinforce safety compliance measures for all theme parks in the state
