With the proliferation of new luxury shopping centres, many people would think twice — or even three times — before deciding whether to drive to their destinations, given that parking fees have become extortionate. Even if parking fees are cheap or reasonable, most people would prefer to use public transport, especially if they plan to spend the whole day somewhere.
However, this local woman and her husband were in for the shock of their lives when they discovered how much it cost them to park for nearly two weeks at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Here’s what happened:

Earlier this week, TikTok user Yaya Tasha posted a video of herself and her husband using KLIA’s Preferred Parking Autopay system. The couple entered their vehicle’s plate number, and according to the timestamp displayed on the screen, the car had been there since 31st December 2024 — a total of 13 days at the time the video was posted.
Much to their surprise, the parking bill amounted to RM2,084. “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” she captioned the TikTok post. Aside from the parking duration, the rates at the Preferred Parking area at KLIA are actually higher than those at regular parking spaces, according to the official KLIA Terminal 1 website. As expected, the video went viral, with netizens expressing the same shock as the uploader.

However, many criticised the couple for not doing her research, as she should have parked her car in the Long-Term Car Park, where the charges would have been lower. A few joked that they could buy another flight ticket with that much money. Some even suspected that the TikTok user and her husband were rich, suggesting that they just wanted to show off how much they needed to pay for the KLIA Preferred Parking.
What would you have done in this situation? Would you pay the exact amount or would you not have done what this couple did and parked somewhere else?
