With K-drama “When the Stars Gossip (별들에게 물어봐)” having released its first two episodes earlier this year, fans are clamouring for more. It’s visually stunning, with a perfect mix of CGI and wirework to emulate that zero-gravity feel, matching the K-drama’s space setting.
With an all-star cast of Lee Min-Ho (이민호), Gong Hyo-Jin (공효진), Oh Jung-Se (오정세) and Han Ji-Eun (한지은), the series has been set up for success from the beginning. So while we eagerly await the release of more episodes, here are some fun facts about the show!
1. First K-drama in space
“When the Stars Gossip” is actually Netflix’s first space K-drama! With a new mix of romance, intrigue and the added excitement of a space venture, this show pioneers the way for a new genre of space romance. It’s a love story that’s quite literally going to be out of this world, so strap in and get ready for the ride.
2. Image based casting
When writing characters, we all have a specific vision in our heads for them. We know what we want to see when the characters come to life, and we have our expectations. Well the casting for this K-drama took that into account, and when finding actors, they searched for whoever was the best visual match!
3. Hyo-Jin’s first leadership role
We all know Hyo-Jin as a highly regarded actress. The star is popularly known as “the queen of romantic comedies”, from all the K-dramas she’s acted in. With shows like “When the Camellia Blooms (동백꽃 필 무렵)” and “Jealousy Incarnate (질투의 화신)”, she’s most definitely an experienced actress.
However, as it turns out, her role as Eve Kim was a totally new adventure for her. This is Hyo-Jin’s first time ever playing a character that’s been placed in a leadership role. Normally we see her on screen as a rookie, or someone who’s inexperienced. So seeing her as Eve, a person who’s got a lot of authority is also something new for us!
4. Eve Kim prioritises animals
While Hyo-Jin’s character Eve is someone who seems cold at first, she’s actually got a soft heart inside. And according to the actress, Eve’s heart belongs to the animals! Hyo-Jin actually said that Eve would be the kind of person who would prioritise an animal’s life over a humans.
5. The crew was shaking chairs
Shows set in space tend to be very dramatic, after all you have to put the drama in K-drama. One of the scenes included the main characters taking off, starting their space journey. It was a rocky endeavour, and involved a lot of shaking. This was done by the crew members, who were hidden out of view from the camera, and shook the actors’ seats by hand, vigorously moving them back and forth in their chairs. The behind-the-scenes must’ve been hilarious to watch.
6. The king and queen of romantic comedies
Lee Min-Ho is known as one of the kings of romantic comedy in the K-drama industry. Having acted in arguably one of the most famous K-dramas ever — “Boys Over Flowers (꽃보다 남자)”, and then going on to star in “Legend of the Blue Sea (푸른 바다의 전설)”, we can see why he gained that title.
With “When the Stars Gossip” showcasing both Min-Ho and Hyo-Jin as the main couple, we get to see both the king and queen of romantic comedies meet on screen for the first time! It can be considered one of the greatest partnerships in the history of K-dramas. We’re looking forward to watch how the two experts play out this love story.
7. Hyo-Jin scolded Jung-Su
As you know, this K-drama takes place in space. With that said, the actors had to shoot many scenes that involved zero-gravity. While the concept of floating around may seem fun and easy, it turns out that there’s actually a method to making it look realistic on screen.
Oh Jung-Se however, didn’t get it at first, which resulted in Hyo-Jin scolding him lightly for his incorrect method, telling him it didn’t look realistic enough. She went on to give him some “pro-tips” for acting like they were acting in space.
8. Gong Ryong (공룡) means dinosaur
In the show Min-Ho’s character, Gong Ryong (공룡), seems to act as a bit of a nuisance, causing troubles for Eve here and there. He plays a rather humorous character. However, Gong Ryong’s name actually translates to dinosaur in English! A stark difference from the character’s personality.
9. Ji-Eun used styling to portray her character
Han Ji-Eun is, without a doubt, an extremely talented actress. It’s clear to see in her portrayal of Choi Go-Eun (최고은), a rich heiress. Since Go-Eun is the only character from the main cast who remains on Earth, Ji-Eun had a lot more outfit choices than the rest of the actors. She used this freedom to help further portray her character, with specific styling choices that reflected the Go-Eun’s mindset in the show.
Her character was only vulnerable in front of Gong Ryong, and to help show that, Ji-Eun used a softer style, with wavier hair, but only when Go-Eun was interacting with her fiancé. Otherwise, she kept her outfits sharp, and cold to shut out other characters.
