GARD and WUZGUT first met through a mutual friend back in 2018, during the height of Soundcloud. After discovering that they had chemistry and could vibe well with one another, the Hip-hop R&B Duo GARD WUZGUT was born. The pair released their album titled “Lebuhraya Slatan” the following year, which earned them a featured spotlight on JOOX ORIGINALS.
Known for standing out with their Manglish flair, GARD WUZGUT previously spoke to Masses.com saying, “I decided to go with a Manglish mix because not everyone can understand Malay street slang, and I also can’t write much better in English because I’m not skilled enough. I used Bahasa Malaysia that’s easy to understand (and) can be understood by people.” In this interview, we talked to the homegrown artist about their songwriting process, favourite lyrics from their songs and more.

Can you remember your first concert? Who was it & how did it make you feel?
Our first concert was a local gig, and it was an incredible experience. The energy of the live music, the crowd’s excitement, and the connection with the performers made me fall in love with live performances. It was a defining moment that inspired me to pursue music seriously.
How much of your songwriting is based on reality, fantasy, or other people’s experience?
Our songwriting is a mix of reality, fantasy, and other people’s experiences. We draw inspiration from my own life, stories we hear, and sometimes, we let my imagination run wild to create something unique. It’s all about blending different elements to tell a compelling story.
Do you have a favourite lyric from your own songs?
One of our favourite lyrics is from “Wonderland” – ‘In this city of dreams, we chase the unseen.’ It captures the essence of pursuing our dreams and the journey we go through in this musical adventure.

What do you do to calm your nerves before a live performance?
Before a live performance, we like to take a few deep breaths, do some light stretching, and have a quick chat with ourselves to get into the right headspace. It’s all about staying relaxed and focused.
Do you have plans on releasing new music?
Yes, we have some new music in the works, and we’re excited to share it with our fans.

What influences determine the style or risks you take in your career?
Our style and the risks we take are influenced by various factors – from current trends and personal experiences to the feedback from our fans. We believe in pushing boundaries and constantly evolving to keep our music fresh and exciting.
Favourite thing(s) to do on a day off?
On a day off, we love to chill with friends, explore new places, or just relax at home with a good book or some music. It’s all about recharging and finding inspiration in everyday moments.

If a friend from abroad were to visit Malaysia, what food or attraction would you recommend for them to try?
We would definitely recommend trying Nasi Lemak (Village Park, Burung Hantu etc) and visiting the Petronas Twin Towers. Both are iconic and offer a true taste of Malaysian culture and beauty.
Best (most helpful) and worst advice you’ve received.
The best advice we’ve received is to stay true to yourself and music. The worst advice was to follow trends blindly without considering our own style and vision. Authenticity is key in this industry.
