After a long wait, the second season of the wildly popular Netflix series “Squid Game (오징어 게임)” has finally premiered on the platform. Given the immense success of the first season, it’s no surprise that fans had high expectations for season two.
“Squid Game 2” premiered on Netflix on 26th December 2024 (Thursday), immediately drawing high viewerships. Despite previous controversy about its characters and cast members, the show appeared to have received a commendable success, on par with its predecessor. The show has also recently achieved a rare feat – the first of its kind on the Netflix streaming platform.

According to reports, the show is the first series on Netflix to debut at #1 in all 93 countries where the streaming site is available. This means “Squid Game 2” is the #1 Netflix series in countries like the United States, Malaysia, Honduras and even Oman, just one day after its premiere. News outlets say this is a difficult achievement to bag as not even “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday” have reached such a level of success.
While the show did obtain a rare achievement, “Squid Game 2” received mixed reviews upon its release. Many praised the acting of the new cast members and the characters’ storyline. However, others said the second season felt lacking compared to the first. Despite the mixed reactions, season three is already slated for a 2025 release. According to show creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the third season will see a time jump and a more intense storyline.

The show has also garnered interest in Malaysia, thanks to the many collaborations and pop-ups in Klang Valley. Have you checked out the second season of “Squid Game”? What are your thoughts on the series?
