Previously, there were claims that Starbucks had closed over 100 outlets across Malaysia, but the F&B company denied it. The brand clarified that only a few had ceased operations, while the rest were temporarily closed as part of a strategic review aimed at better aligning the company’s activities.

While that may have been the case, Starbucks is still one of the many global brands significantly affected by the ongoing boycott. Given this, it wouldn’t be surprising if the boycott was one of the reasons behind the closure of several outlets. It has now been reported that another outlet ceased operations very recently.

According to Sin Chew Daily, the last remaining Starbucks store in Kelantan officially closed over the weekend (Saturday, 30th November). The store, located in KB Mall in Kota Bharu, is reportedly the latest to permanently cease operations, following the closure of two other outlets in nearby commercial areas earlier this year.

At the time of writing, there has been no official statement from Starbucks Malaysia regarding the latest closure, but a quick online check confirms that the outlet is no longer operational. Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, award-winning photographer Lee Chin Chuan confirmed the news as well saying that the store had stopped selling coffee three days prior to the closure and was only serving non-coffee drinks to customers.

He also described how, on the last day of operation, many of the chairs and tables had already been chained up and products were sealed in boxes. As for the employees, it was reported that many had handed in their resignation letters, preferring not to be relocated to other outlets across the country. Some were also heavily affected by the severe flooding in Kelantan.

The reason for the closure of the KB Mall outlet remains unknown. Whatever the case, we wish the now-former employees the very best in their future endeavours and hope those affected by the flood receive the help they need.
