If you haven’t yet seen the highly anticipated film adaptation of the iconic musical “Wicked”, we’d highly recommend it. Believe us when we say it definitely did “defy gravity”. Alongside Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, our very own Tan Sri Dato’ Michelle Yeoh (杨紫琼) stars as the cunning Madame Morrible, marking her first-ever singing role in a film.
However, while it may be her first time singing live on camera for “Wicked”, it’s not the first time she has sung professionally. Did you know that she had performed a theme song for a film back in the early 90s?

Throughout many of her interviews promoting “Wicked”, Michelle has claimed that she is not a professionally trained singer, unlike the rest of her castmates in the musical. That may be true, but what she failed to mention is that she was once part of another motion picture soundtrack.
Back in 1993, the Oscar winner starred in the Hong Kong film “Butterfly & Sword” as Lady Ko, alongside Tony Leung (梁朝伟). Apparently, she also sang the theme song for the film, titled “Love Is Like A Shooting Star”, and filmed a music video for it which was later uploaded to ROCK RECORD’s YouTube channel in 2012. Sadly, this is the only song and music video she’s ever worked on before taking on the role of Madame Morrible in “Wicked”.

As reported by The Star, this forgotten track was mentioned during a recent video call interview, where Michelle Yeoh playfully covered her ears and said, “I can’t hear.” The 62-year-old can deny it all she wants, but now that the iconic musical is added to her resume, perhaps she’ll be offered more singing roles in the future. We can only hope so.
