After a long wait, Hong Kong star Andy Lau (刘德华) has returned to the Kuala Lumpur stage! The actor-singer performed his first show out of four as part of his “Today … Is The Day (今天is the day)” tour yesterday (24th October, Thursday) at Axiata Arena, in front of a sold-out crowd.
Given that this is his first show in Malaysia since 2019, it’s no surprise that local fans were ecstatic to see the singer. Andy also seemed equally excited to see his Malaysian fans, likely because of his connection to the country through his Malaysian-born wife, Carol Chu (朱麗卿). Andy also joked that performing in Malaysia is like meeting his family, quipping that he saw a lot of familiar faces amongst the crowd.
Funnily enough, Andy also indirectly mentioned his wife after seeing several female fans in the audience dressed in wedding gowns and veils. He joked about their outfits, saying, “How many wives do I have?”. However, when the crowd started cheering, he laughed and said, “I’m going to get my ears twisted when I get home later!”. Many fans noted that Andy was particularly cheeky during the concert, often cracking jokes and teasing fans.
At one point in the show, the 63-year-old reminisced about his long-standing career, saying he remembered performing in Malaysia many years ago. However, he then joked with fans, saying, “I remember everyone called me “Handsome Wah” back then. Aren’t you bored after calling me that for forty years?”. Despite the teasing, Andy provided tons of fan service during the show, sending hearts and blowing kisses to the crowd.
The concert went smoothly and ended successfully without any glitches. After the encore, many fans continued cheering. In response to the crowd’s enthusiasm, Andy said, “If you want, I’ll come back to sing next year. If you want to see me at 80, I’ll continue to act. If you want me to sing until I’m 120, I’ll accompany you to grow old!”
Andy Lau will continue the rest of the four-day KL leg starting tonight (25th October, Friday). Tickets to all four shows have sold out, and many fans lamented that they failed to get tickets, so let’s hope Andy will keep his promise to return.
