When you think of a local tour guide, you typically imagine someone simply doing their job of showing visitors around places of interest. While it’s not necessarily part of the job to entertain those they’re escorting, many tour guides go the extra mile to form connections, often leaving visitors with fond memories and, sometimes, even new friendships.
Recently, a video of a Malaysian tour guide in Penang went viral for his heartwarming and amusing efforts to entertain the visitors. Though it was quite an odd move, netizens praised his dedication. Here’s what happened:
In the TikTok video posted by user @/calumdilieto, most of the visitors on the bus can be seen either sleeping or talking among themselves, visibly tired from the earlier part of their trip. However, what caught the attention of netizens was the person standing at the front of the bus, the tour guide who was dressed in a vibrant orange shirt, passionately singing Coldplay’s “Yellow” with a microphone in hand, clearly having his “Viva La Vida” moment.
According to replies from the TikTok user, the tour guide, named Michael, decided to hold a mini-karaoke session to entertain the weary passengers as they made their way to Hin Bus Depot in Georgetown. Midway through the 31-second clip, Michael could even be seen encouraging the passengers to sing along with him. Despite his enthusiasm, he didn’t get much response, as many of the passengers were too exhausted to join in on the fun.
Most of the comments under the video were filled with praise for Michael, with many saying they would happily go on a tour with him as their guide and would even give him an extra tip for his performance. Others expressed slight sympathy for him, noting that no one was matching his enthusiasm. Some viewers even asked where they could book a trip with Michael as their guide!
