After more than a year of the boycott movement to support Palestine, many international franchises in Malaysia are still suffering from lack of customers – including McDonald’s. It seems that the brand is eliminating its old and small outlets, which may be the result of declining sales in recent months.
Earlier this year, the company had its first outlet shut down, which was the McDonald’s located inside a Giant Supermarket outlet in Shah Alam’s Section 13. Since nearby Section 18 isn’t typically a quiet neighbourhood either, it came to a shock that the local McD branch was replaced by local fast food chain restaurant, Marrybrown.

A Twitter user recently shared the update, posting a photo of the soon-to-open Marrybrown outlet, with the caption, “RIP McD sek 18 shah alam”. Many mixed reactions were expressed through the Twitter user comment section. Some locals were pleased to see the downfall of said company, showing their clear stance. However, others were filled with nostalgia from the times they would frequent the restaurant years ago.
However, the Marrybrown takeover might not signify McDonald’s downfall because netizens quickly shared that although this McDonald’s branch is now closed, a new outlet had just opened nearby. In addition, the new outlet is more improved as it even has a drive-through. The netizens also discussed Marrybrown, with there being comments in both a positive and negative light.

Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation on why these outlets are closing down, and we can only speculate that it’s due to the ongoing year-long boycott. Have any local McDonald’s branches near you went out of business?
