The return of the rainy season means Malaysians have to be on the lookout for flash floods and landslides. Unfortunately, today’s (15th October 2024, Tuesday) incessant heavy rain seems to have triggered both phenomena on the same day.
Various news outlets have reported that several areas in Kuala Lumpur have been flooded following the heavy rain since early morning. According to reports, the areas affected include the surrounding area of Jalan Rakyat (where the Bank Rakyat building stands), Jalan Ampang, Jalan Tangsi and Jalan Parlimen. Photos and videos of the flood have gone viral on social media, showing the severity of the situation.

In response to the floods, Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Command & Control Centre reported that the SMART Tunnel has been closed to traffic to handle the rising water levels. Motorists and commuters are advised to avoid the affected areas and be careful on the road. The flash floods have also caused several disruptions to public transportation services, including the Kelana Jaya LRT Line. RapidKL has since announced alternative services via train and buses as their team works to handle the issue.
In addition to flash floods, the heavy rain triggered a landslide in the Taman Melawati township. Many residents have taken to social media to report the landslide in a housing area in Taman E6. Following the incident, one social media user claimed that around 30 affected residents were being evacuated. In the meantime, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said authorities have cordoned the area off for safety reasons.

It’s best to avoid the affected areas until the situation is under control – but if you’re in Kuala Lumpur, be careful when on the road and stay updated on traffic reports. For those in the landslide-affected areas, please abide by the authorities’ instructions and stay away from slopes. We hope everyone will remain safe during this trying time.
