If you’ve been reading the news lately, you’d have noticed that there have been many crime cases in Malaysia over the past few months. These cases have caused unrest amongst locals – but one recent case in Bangsar has also raised criticism towards the public’s reaction to crime.
Yesterday (7th October 2024, Monday), a 78-year-old woman in Bangsar became the victim of a snatch thief on a motorcycle. According to news reports, the incident occurred around 6.30am at Jalan Limau Manis while the victim was walking to a shop. CCTV footage of the incident showed the woman walking alone on the street until a motorcyclist suddenly snatched her handbag, causing her to fall onto the road.

The victim was sprawled motionless on the road until several concerned passersby went to her aid. She’s now at the University Malaya Medical Centre, receiving treatment for her injuries. According to Brickfields police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood, the victim suffered significant bleeding in her head. The police chief also confirmed that the victim has filed a police report, and an investigation into the case has been opened.
Netizens have shared their reactions to the news and CCTV footage. However, many criticised the lack of concern from two passersby towards the elderly woman. The two individuals had walked past the victim without approaching her while she sat injured by the road. Many netizens called the two selfish and heartless for not offering assistance, saying they’re just as bad as the perpetrator.

In the meantime, many voiced sympathy towards the victim and hoped for a smooth recovery. We also hope that the woman is safe now and can recover from the traumatic experience – but what do you think about this issue? Do you also condemn those who failed to show sympathy towards the victim in her time of need? Or is this the sad reality of today’s society?
