Universiti Teknologi MARA, known more familiarly as UiTM, has received some heat online recently. After netizens called out university facilitators for their childish prank during an orientation program at the Segamat campus, the public university received more hate for its pettiness towards students.
A Twitter post depicting a PowerPoint presentation slide shown to UiTM students at a campus event had recently gone viral. The slide was titled “Examples of Negative Online Posting” and shows a collection of tweets from UiTM students sharing their dissatisfaction with the university on various issues, including slow internet speed, frequent power outages and poor management.
It’s unclear where the presentation took place or the context of the slide. However, it appears UiTM had publicised the tweets to discourage current students from making negative remarks about the university. It’s also worth noting that tweets shown include vulgar language. Nevertheless, the tweet unsurprisingly raised even more dissatisfaction towards the university, with netizens calling the institution out for publicly shaming students.
Many said the complaints were justified because the students have the right to speak out about unsatisfactory experiences. Some students even took the opportunity to exhibit disappointing issues at their respective campuses to prove that the tweets weren’t groundless comments. Others argued that instead of being petty and shaming students for making the complaints, the university should’ve addressed and improved on the issues mentioned.
It seems the majority agreed that UiTM could’ve addressed this issue more professionally rather than trying to shame students for voicing their opinions. Many also said students wouldn’t have spoken out if the situation had improved. The university has yet to speak up on this issue – but what are your thoughts on this matter?
