However, what would the public think of a 2D idol, entirely controlled by smart technology? Recently, the K-pop community has been buzzing over SM Town’s upcoming AI solo idol. Here’s why:
NAEVIS (나이비스) is the fictional character who has captivated fans with her appearances in aespa’s (에스파) music videos and the group’s lore. Serving as the navigator between the four members and their digital counterparts, NAEVIS embodies the mysterious and powerful fusion of technology and humanity within the Kwangya universe, adding depth to aespa’s unique storytelling.
After over a year of speculation and anticipation, SM Town has officially confirmed that NAEVIS will make her debut on 10th September 2024. Her debut single, titled “Done,” will be crafted entirely from AI-generated content with her voice meticulously created using advanced AI techniques. This marks an exciting new chapter in K-pop, where the boundaries between reality and fiction are becoming more intriguing and harder to distinguish.
Despite the exclusivity and innovation behind the debut, it has sparked mixed reactions among netizens. Just yesterday (29th August), SM Town released the teaser images for NAEVIS’s debut single, and the AI character quickly garnered praise for her striking visuals. Many fans even drew comparisons between NAEVIS and established stars in the industry, highlighting her impressive design and presence.
However, not all feedback has been positive. Some expressed their discontent due to the discourse of how AI technology is stealing jobs. In this case, they argued that it’s unfair for an AI character to debut before the neglected trainees who have yet to receive their chance in the spotlight. Others also pointed out flaws and a lack of detail attributed to the reliance on AI tools.
