Three Malaysian indie acts have just dropped dope music videos – which feature everything from emotional stories to imaginative visuals – and we are vibing to their awesomeness. From raw emotional depth to unique aesthetics – these MVs are a feast for the senses.

Joni Mustaf’s “Darling Silver Blue” captivates with its charmingly spontaneous style, while Motherwit’s “Dan Bila” offers a poignant reflection on loss through powerful imagery. Also enriching this diverse lineup is Judos’s “Terkilanku Sedar,” which delves into the pain of unreciprocated love through its evocative visuals and deeply moving lyrics. These fresh releases present a rich variety of styles and emotions, ensuring there’s something to touch every music lover’s heart.

Joni Mustaf – “Darling Silver Blue”

YouTube video

Joni Mustaf’s track “Darling Silver Blue,” from the album “Qurfusha,” showcases a powerful blend of melancholia and hope. But it’s not just the music that stands out—the music video, which dropped on 27th August, adds a whole new layer of charm and curiosity.

The video was filmed semi-impromptu in Jakarta in 2019 under the direction of Indonesian indie cult icon Harlan Boer. It’s like a spontaneous vlog filled with quirky moments that really bring the song’s vibe to life. From the scene set in a cassette store and using a massage chair, to munching on popcorn – the video is full of random yet oddly captivating imagery. The use of cardboard and paper props adds to the DIY, almost playful feel of the visuals.

Motherwit – “Dan Bila”

YouTube video

A month ago, the music video for “Dan Bila” was released, providing a powerful visual match to the emotionally charged track. Inspired by the tragic disappearance of MH370, the song captures the profound sense of loss and separation experienced by those affected by the tragedy. The video’s symbolism enriches the song, notably with a child playing with black paper planes when a white plane suddenly falls from the sky, symbolszing the faint hope and anticipation of families waiting for their loved ones’ return.

Another impactful scene shows a playground clock frozen at the time the flight was last detected, grounding the visuals in the tragedy’s timeline. The video’s deep sorrow mirrors the song’s emotional depth, with the black-and-white filter during the band’s performance intensifying the sense of loss. Featuring Sara Razz, the song not only highlights her vocals, but also deepens the video’s emotional impact, offering a heartfelt tribute to those affected by the tragedy.

Judos – “Terkilanku Sedar”

YouTube video

The music video for “Terkilanku Sedar” by Judos vividly portrays the emotional conflict of unreciprocated love, capturing the heartache and frustration of a one-sided relationship. Haunting visuals and heartbreaking lyrics convey the protagonist’s desperation and emotional exhaustion, resonating with anyone who has experienced the pain of unacknowledged feelings. A recurring scene of a girl running aimlessly, searching for something unattainable, symbolises the futility of her pursuit and adds a powerful visual element to the narrative.

As the video progresses, the protagonist realises the uselessness of their search, leading to a shift toward self-awareness and the need for change. They struggle with the inner conflict between holding onto hope and the necessity of moving on for their emotional well-being. The video ends on a bittersweet note, balancing the yearning for love with the painful acceptance of reality.
