Apart from watching some amazing Malaysian movies, another great way to get us into the spirit of Merdeka is to listen to all the timeless classic songs like “KeranaMu Malaysia”, “Tanggal 31” and “Jalur Gemilang”. Although we’ve heard them countless times during our school years, they still remain iconic and Malaysians can’t help but sing along to every word.
Over the years, there have been many songs about the Merdeka celebration and this year is no different. So without any further ado, here are 5 new songs you should check out to get you in the spirit of Merdeka:
1. Malaysia Madani Jiwa Merdeka – Amir Masdi

Let’s start with the latest song that was just released last week. “Malaysia Madani Jiwa Merdeka” served as the official theme song for Malaysia’s 67th Independence Day and was sung by singer Amir Masdi. Apart from the visuals of the singer singing in an empty movie hall, the music video also showcased everything we love about our country to further ignite that Merdeka spirit within us.
2. Inilah Kita – Various Artists

Nothing says unity more than a musical collaboration. Hael Husaini, Wani Kayrie, Balan Kash, Roshini Balachandran, Daniel Fong, and Joey Leong came together to sing this new Merdeka song titled “Inilah Kita” in different languages, demonstrating our country’s multicultural society.
3. Semarakkan Merdeka – Floor 88

What we personally love about this track by local band Floor 88 is how nostalgic-sounding it is. “Semarakkan Merdeka” reminded us of our school days singing patriotic songs as the music is very reminiscent of the aforementioned timeless classics. The music video also displayed fun and silly moments with kids to probably serve as a reminder of our youth and innocence, enjoying life while we still can, especially on a special day like Merdeka.
4. Bersama Satu Suara by MR.DIY – Various Artists

MR. DIY made good use of their budget this year since they were able to get Alif Satar & The Locos, Priscilla Abby and the legendary Jaclyn Victor on one track! They may be a home improvement retail brand but that’s basically the whole point of it all since we are celebrating the love we have for our home country Malaysia. Parts of the chorus’ melody were probably a nod to the iconic “Saya Anak Malaysia”. Regardless if that was intentional or not, it’s definitely catchy enough for everyone to sing along.
5. INILAH MYGENERASI, YEO’S!

Unlike the other songs on this list, “INILAH MYGENERASI, YEO’S!” performed by Aisha Retno has a 2000s hip-hop vibe to it. It may served as an advertisement for the YEO’S drinks but the lyrics still talk about taking pride in Malaysia’s achievements and celebrating the country’s unity and diversity. Plus, you can’t properly enjoy the celebrations if you don’t stay hydrated so why not grab yourself a bottle now?
