The search for the next Miss Hong Kong has officially begun – and we’ve already gotten a look at who is in the running for the crown. However, the 2024 Miss Hong Kong Pageant (香港小姐競選) has already hit its first roadblock even before the contestants’ official introduction to the public.
According to China Press, six contestants have announced they withdrew from the prestigious pageant following the second round of interviews. The six contestants are Caroline, Christina Zhao, Huang Yan, Crystal, Jackie and an unnamed sixth individual. As for why these contestants pulled out of the competition, they reportedly didn’t want to sign TVB’s contract.

Some contestants, like Christina Zhao, also took to social media to directly address their withdrawal. According to the golf academy director, she decided to pull when reviewing the contracts she needed to sign to enter the pageant. She said that the documents made her realise that there were areas where she still needed to improve, and thus, leave the competition to ensure she could continue growing before presenting herself on the pageant stage.
Caroline, nicknamed “Military Financial Beauty” because of her career in finance and her surprising skills in handling firearms, also revealed that she didn’t want to proceed with the next round because she wasn’t comfortable signing with TVB after carefully considering the terms stipulated in the contract. However, she said her experience had been great, and she had met many beautiful and outstanding women. She also revealed that she met up with the other five girls after they withdrew from Miss HK 2024.
One crowd favourite for this year’s pageant was Huang Yan, a University of Hong Kong Master’s degree student. Unfortunately, she also had withdrawn from the pageant and, like the others, cited the TVB contract as her reason for leaving. According to the now-former Miss HK contestant, she was mentally prepared to face the possibility of signing a contract once she passed the interviews but didn’t expect the terms to be so strict.

While the news may be sad, contestants withdrawing from the Miss HK pageant isn’t new. At the same time, TVB contracts are rather infamous amongst fans of the broadcasting company for their strict clauses. While we may not see these six girls in the running anymore, we wish them all the best in their future endeavours.
