It’s always exciting to watch a scene where Malaysia is mentioned or even featured in a foreign movie or TV series. Even more exciting if one of our locally-born talents starred in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie. With that being said, to our knowledge, our country has never actually been featured in an MCU project but that may be soon to change.
Recently, it was reported that “Blackwidow” star Florence Pugh shot a scene for the upcoming MCU movie, “Thunderbolts” in Malaysia. According to Maxblizz, stunt performer Sarah Irwin, who has also worked on “Loki”, hinted that they shot a scene where the actress’s character Yelena Belova, also known as a Black Widow agent, skydives from the top of Merdeka 118, which is known as the second tallest building in the world.
If that wasn’t convincing enough, voice actress, Arabella Gibbins, who is also Florence’s sister, posted a photo on her Instagram that she was recently in KL with Florence and her best friend Theo Smith. In the post, the voice-over artist was seen in a hotel next to the iconic Petronas Twin Towers. “Taking it all in. So many moments and sights to savour, it’s been a very surreal few days! Never thought I’d be in Malaysia this year so thank you thank you thank you, lucky stars @florencepugh & @theo_smith,” she captioned her post.
The IG post, of course, further added to the speculations that filming for “Thunderbolts” did take place in the city. Walt Disney Studio must’ve done an incredible job keeping this under wraps as neither Florence nor any filming crew were spotted in Malaysia over the last few days.
Sadly, no word from the studio regarding the rumours about this particular scene so far and since the movie has just finished the filming process, it’ll definitely be a while before we get to see the teasers and the trailers. Even then, there’s no guarantee that the Merdeka 118 scene would be included in the final cut. For your information, “Thunderbolts” also stars Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), and David Harbour (Red Guardian) and will serve as the last movie for Phase 5 of the MCU.
Will we see Florence as Yelena skydiving off the Merdeka 118 tower in the movie? Let’s hope so.
