Renowned Hong Kong actor-director Stephen Chow (周星馳) recently celebrated his 62nd birthday – and it turned out to be a rather international affair. That’s because the Hong Kong star celebrated his big day with Japanese dance troupe Avantgardey (アバンギャルディ) and, to an extent, Malaysian musical trio Steady Gang.
The public figure recently shared a video of him getting a birthday performance from the Japanese dance troupe. Avantgardey was in Hong Kong during Stephen’s birthday weekend and thus decided to celebrate his special day with an exclusive performance. The video starts with the group entering the room whilst the song “Trendy Now” from Hong Kong singer-actor Louis Koo plays in the background. In the video, Stephen had turned his back to the camera but seemed eager for the show the girls were about to put on for him.
However, as the group started performing, the song changed to Steady Gang’s “Chou Xing Chi (周星翅)”. The viral track from the Malaysian trio is a tribute to Stephen, and the title is even a play on the director’s Chinese name. As Avantgardey performs the song and the choreography for Stephen, the director can be seen happily dancing along. In his caption, Stephen joked about being late to trends, writing, “I prepared myself thoroughly to dance and make friends with Avantgardey, aiming to stay in trend. It turns out I was outdated already. The song ‘Trendy Now’ is already last season’s trend.”
Of course, the video caught the attention of many Malaysians, including the members of Steady Gang, who were excited that Stephen posted about their own on his social media account. In an Instagram post, the trio shared their reactions to the video, wishing Stephen a happy birthday and thanking Avantgardey for featuring their song. However, member Tomato jokingly questioned why they weren’t invited to dance for the star before putting on an impromptu performance in their hotel room with his group mates.
We would also like to wish Stephen a happy birthday – and we look forward to seeing a collaboration between him and Steady Gang in the future.
