It has been an ongoing trend for retailers all over the world to use crazy videos to promote their products or brands, but no one does it like the Malaysians do! AEON has a history of turning viral situations into marketing opportunities, such as the Super Rings scandal which many seem to think was hilarious.
This time, the company is being praised for its quick marketing and humorous references to a viral video of a man fighting with a Penang store owner. In the clip, the man lost the fight three times, claiming he would have won if he hadn’t been drunk. AEON’s response was both entertaining and uniquely Malaysian-themed.
AEON recently posted a promo on their official Facebook page, showcasing a singlet sold at their store, which is an obvious reference to what the man in the viral clip was wearing. The product picture was captioned, “Selesa dipakai untuk semua keadaan,” which translates to “Comfortable to wear for any occasion”.
Malaysians wasted no time posting funny replies in their characteristic fashion, trolling the brand and sharing inside jokes that locals understand. One user commented on the cat in the video that adorably nosed around, another asked if the helmet comes with the singlet, and one even requested coloured shirts to match the other man, who was dressed in blue.
This new way of marketing has definitely been making selling products more fun, using the technique of gaining attention to further promote your item has definitely been helping these sellers if AEON as well has used this tactic.
