K-pop and K-dramas are all the rage now. In fact, many Malaysian’s obsession with Korean entertainment has gotten to a point where they no longer need subtitles to understand what’s being said. Some have even incorporated certain Korean words into their daily vocabulary.
One of the most popular Korean words is “Saranghae” or “Saranghaeyo” which means “I love you” and although it may be popular, no one would ever expect to hear those words being spoken by a royal family member so casually. Many were definitely surprised to hear Tengku Hassanal, the Crown Prince of Pahang saying those words at a recent event.
Earlier this week, the young Prince was on official duty attending the inauguration ceremony of the Kuliyyah of Sustainable Tourism and Contemporary Languages at the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) Pagoh in Muar, Johor. A video circulated on TikTok showed the royal family member exiting the venue where he can be heard asking someone about the foreign language courses at the university.
When the 28-year-old heard that Korean was among those language courses, he immediately said, “Saranghae” which is the informal way of saying “I love you”. Who knew that a simple word could capture the hearts of many? The video instantly went viral with many commenting that they never expected someone of royal status to utter the romantic word in the foreign language.
As someone who is in his 20s, some jokingly speculated that Tengku Hassanal may be a fan of K-dramas as well. There’s apparently another video from the same event where a group of fans asked him for a selfie as he was about to drive off. Again, the son of the former Agong uttered the word “Saranghae”, much to everyone’s delight.
Perhaps one day, we’d get to hear Tengku Hassanal say “I love you” in other languages. Which language would you like to hear him speak in?
