Many content creators could only dream of going viral internationally for their original content. Although difficult, it’s not impossible and our very own Malaysian girl group De Fam proved just that with their “Alamak Raya Lagi” dance challenge.
As for this Singaporean TikToker, not only did he go viral in his country for starting a trend, but he also caught the attention of K-pop idols who also participated in the trend! Earlier this year, a Singaporean content creator who goes by @/ummmyuhasdf posted a video on his TikTok channel to show a simple way to make a heart-shaped sign using 4 fingers.

“Did you know that if you cover your eyebrow with your index finger, point your middle finger to your nose, and when you do it on both sides, you’ll find out that I miss you?” he said while demonstrating the gesture. The post started what has now been known as the “I Miss You” trend. The TikTok video has gone viral ever since and has become one of his most-viewed videos with over 17 million views.
Many have done the trend themselves but no one would have expected that it would reach popular K-pop idols. A month after the trend’s creation, NCT posted a video on their TikTok channel of member Riku (리쿠/前田陸) doing the challenge using the original creator’s audio, making him one of the earliest Korean idols to do the “I Miss You” trend. Earlier this month, SHINee’s Minho (민호) also posted a similar video of himself doing the cute gesture on the group’s TikTok channel, much to his Singaporean fans’ delight.
Singer-songwriter IU (아이유) joined in on the fun yesterday (Thursday, 30th May), by posting her version of the trend on her TikTok channel. The songstress’s video even caught the attention of Visit Singapore, the country’s Tourism Board’s social media account. “Too cute. We definitely miss you. Come back to Singapore soon,” they commented.

As seen in the comments on all 3 idols’ posts, most were from Singaporean fans who recognised the audio and the creator’s accent. If you’re wondering whether or not @/ummmyuhasdf is aware of these Korean celebs’ contribution to the trend, the influencer once commented that he was still processing the fact that Minho and Riku participated in it. It is unknown if the TikToker knew about IU’s version.
