Malaysians and Singaporeans are all too familiar with the “food feud” between the two countries. We’d all like to say our respective countries have the better food – but what does Singaporean funnyman Gurmit Singh have to say?

The actor, who is best known for his role as Phua Chu Kang, is currently in Malaysia to promote his new movie, “The Chosen One”, and comedy show, “Laugh Die You”. While in Kuala Lumpur, he teamed up with food content creator Daniel Liew (@/danieldineskl) to film a review of Malaysia’s national dish, nasi lemak, at Mali’s Corner in Setapak.

While the duo queued for their meal, Daniel asked Gurmit whether the actor preferred Malaysian nasi lemak or Singaporean nasi lemak. The comedian quickly answered, “Malaysia!” – which surprised Daniel. Gurmit even doubled down on his answer, saying, “You see, no hesitation ah!”. The Singaporean also briefly talked about his upcoming comedy show before digging into the plate of nasi lemak, which, as shown in the video, impressed him.

During the video, Daniel also quizzed Gurmit on which country between Singapore and Malaysia does which local dish the best. According to the 59-year-old, Malaysia does nasi lemak, Hokkien mee and chicken rice better. However, he said he chose Malaysian chicken rice because his favourite stall in Singapore had closed down. On the other hand, he said he prefers the Singaporean style of bak kut teh, chilli crab and char kuey teow.

Many Malaysians have reacted to the video, most reminiscing about Gurmit’s Phua Chu Kang character. Many said the actor was a huge part of their childhood, so it’s great to see him still kicking it and making people laugh. On the other hand, some commended him for eating nasi lemak with his hand, saying it’s the “proper way”. Some also questioned him for saying Singaporean char kuey teow tastes better, adding that they want to try it for themselves.

We hope Gurmit has a great stay in Malaysia and feast on as many local dishes as he desires.
