Whenever K-pop idols debut or make comebacks, you’ll definitely see them doing TikTok dance challenges of their new song, especially with other idols or Korean celebrities. However, it has come to our attention that there are hardly any dance challenges of these idols with people with disabilities.
That is until boy group Big Ocean (빅오션) came into the picture. The 3-member group recently debuted with their song “Glow” and what makes it special is that all members have hearing impairment. Being disabled themselves, it’s no surprise that they want to be inclusive with their music – and that involves those with disabilities. Watch:
Yesterday (Thursday, 25th April), Big Ocean posted a TikTok video of them doing their “Glow” dance challenge at KBS TV station. What made this dance challenge different from the others is that they invited KBS news anchor Gukhwa Choi (최국화), who is wheelchair-bound, to join them.
As seen in the video posted below, the boys and the disabled news anchor happily did the song’s fun choreography before the members circled around Gukhwa to give her a high five. The TikTok post quickly became the group’s most-viewed video on their channel with over 1 million views and has since circulated all over social media.
K-pop fans worldwide, especially those with similar disabilities as the TV personality, praised Big Ocean for being inclusive with their dance challenge as it’s something they’ve never seen before. Many took to Twitter to express gratitude to the members for making them feel seen and appreciated and for making a huge step in the Korean entertainment industry.
Who knows, perhaps Big Ocean’s challenge could inspire other K-pop idols and music labels to do the same and be more inclusive with their own TikTok challenges. Even if it’s not a dance challenge, fans with disabilities would definitely appreciate the gesture of being represented on the idol’s social media.
