“Ah Girls Go Army” actress and entrepreneur Shirli Ling is only 35 years old – but would you believe the Singaporean is already a grandmother? Last year, Shirli piqued netizens’ curiosity when she briefly mentioned that she became a grandmother at the young age of 34 – and recently, she shared her experience in greater detail.
In her Instagram video, Shirli spoke about how she became a grandmother after her eldest son, then 17 years old, revealed that he and his girlfriend were expecting. The mother of five, who also had her first child at 17, said she wanted the pair to be responsible for their actions. She said she gave them the power to decide whether they wanted to keep the child.
Shirli said she couldn’t decide for her child as she wanted him to own up to his actions. She added that if she decided the young couple’s fate, they would one day regret it or hate her for impacting their lives. The entrepreneur also mentioned that she doesn’t encourage her children to be young parents as she understands the hardship of being a young mother.
However, as the young couple were already expecting, Shirli said she could only teach them how to face their actions. She added that she couldn’t guarantee the two teenagers’ future if they decided to terminate the pregnancy, saying they might make the same mistake again. She continued, saying that her role as a parent meant supporting and educating her children during difficult times. She added that parents should always show their children love and compassion, regardless of what happens.
The video received tons of attention, with Shirli receiving praise for how she handled the situation with her teenage son. Many said her reaction shows her love for her children, as some parents would have gotten angry at their children. However, some questioned if Shirli could be supportive if her daughter had gotten pregnant.
Regardless, it seems Shirli has a lot of love for her children – and, even if it’s hard, it’s great that she accepted what had happened with an open mind. We wish the best to Shirli and her family in their future endeavours!
