Netizens React To Malaysia Possibly Hosting Commonwealth Games In 2026

We take pride in our athletes representing our country in international sports tournaments regardless of whether they win or lose. And for these tournaments, countries from all over the world would have their turn in hosting these iconic events, like the Olympics which will take place in Paris, France later this year.

Speaking of hosting, word on the street is that Malaysia has been offered to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Normally, news like this would excite our locals but this time, many have rejected the idea of our country hosting the upcoming quadrennial international multi-sport event. Here’s why:

According to several news reports, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has offered Malaysia the opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026 after Australia backed out of the deal. Originally, the land from down under was supposed to host the games in March 2026 but due to the high costs, they had no choice but to withdraw themselves from the agreement.

It was reported that the government of Victoria was even willing to pay AUD380 million (RM1,177,057,818) for breaching the contract to host the games. Not long after, Malaysia was then offered as the next country to host the international event. Although Malaysia has hosted the games once before in 1998, the news didn’t sit quite well with netizens as many believed that it would not be financially possible.

Malaysians took to Twitter to express their disapproval of our country hosting the Commonwealth Games with some saying that if Australia could not afford the high cost then Malaysia would definitely not be able to make a profit. Others said the games had no more significance after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. A few showed concern over time constraints since we only have about 2 years to prepare for this big event.

As for what the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has to say about the offer, Malaymail reported that the matter is currently being discussed with the government. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh told the media last weekend that the decision of Malaysia to possibly host the Commonwealth Games will be announced soon.

Do you agree with netizens about the cost concerns or should Malaysia take the risk in hosting the annual sports event?
