There’s been a string of passings lately, from New Southern Records founder Gan Wah Yik, to Hong Kong actress Violet Lee. Unfortunately, Surina Shukri, former CEO of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has also joined the list of those who’ve left us.
Surina Shukri reportedly passed away earlier today (29th February) at Ampang Puteri Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. As many may know, the former CEO has spent several years fighting cancer prior to her passing. All who have been touched by her life have since expressed their condolences.
According to a post made by her family on social media, Surina passed away at 9am this morning in the hospital surrounded by her family. Funeral prayers for her took place at Masjid At-Taqwa in Taman Tun Dr Ismail late this afternoon.
Surina was notably the CEO of MDEC from 16th January 2019 to 31st August 2021 and was also an independent non-executive director at Capital A (formerly known as AirAsia Group) and CIMB Investment Bank Bhd. She was also known as an influential figure in various circles, even being named one of the World’s 50 Most Influential People Revolutionising Governance in the inaugural Agile 50 list in 2020.
But, more than that, she also left her mark on many lives in her lifetime. Netizens have shared memories they had of her either from a glimpse or in passing. Others who were blessed to work with her recalled moments spent together. “The most hardworking and one of smartest women in corporate I’ve ever met. Someone that i highly look up to,” one netizen praised. Another said: “Surina Shukri was a woman who believed in me and supported my journey from the moment we met.” Each and every message however ends the same, telling her to go in peace.
Surina Shukri is succeeded by her husband, Jasmin Ong Rashid, and three children, Ean, Arianna and Zac. Our hearts go out to her family and all who knew her. We sincerely hope they will find peace in her passing.
