Fanservice is a huge part of Korean entertainment culture – and it’s a big reason why many fans continue to support their favourite K-pop singers. While fanservice can range from subtle “heart poses” to daring kisses, Korean singer BIBI (비비)’s fanservice had her American fans in hysterics.
The 26-year-old was on the South Korean talk show ‘Radio Star’ when she talked about fan service. The singer mentioned that she’s known for her fan service and enjoys doing it for her adoring fans. One of the examples of fanservice she recalled doing was during her set at the 2021 Head In The Clouds (HITC) Festival in Los Angeles, California.
During the performance of one of her hit songs, “Cigarette & Condoms”, the singer shocked fans when she suddenly tossed out a basket-worth of condoms to the crowd. According to the singer, the idea behind the surprising gift was because of the song itself. She mentioned that she was only comfortable with giving out condoms during her US concert because fans in the Western countries are generally more open-minded and progressive. She also said that the condoms do serve a purpose because some fans may need them.
As for the fans in conservative South Korea, BIBI said she gives out packs of gummy bear candy instead of condoms. However, host Yoo Se Yoon (유세윤) jokingly questioned the reason for the difference in fan service. Fellow talk show guest Car, The Garden (카더가든) quipped that she should be considerate of her Korean fans’ sex life and give out condoms to them as well.
During the same HITC stage, BIBI also sent fans into a frenzy when she suddenly stepped off stage to kiss a female fan on the lips. It does seem like going to a BIBI concert does have its surprising perks, so maybe this is a sign to see her in person when there is a chance.
