Malaysia boasts many incredible malls – and most of them are often crowded. Unfortunately, there are also “dead” malls which don’t attract the visitors they need to survive. One of those “dead” malls is the Space U8 Mall in Shah Alam. The mall has been around for years, but now only has a handful of tenants. The Twitter account @/MyBktJelutong recently shared the current state of the mall, which seemed rather lifeless.

In the tweet, the account wrote, “Space U8 Monday morning 12 Feb 2024. There are still a few anchor tenants (MBO Cinema and MR. DIY) and a few event halls for rental. Besides the police station, there are a few clothing and food stores. The rest (are) empty.”

The account also attached a video to show how barren the Space U8 mall is. The mall has four floors with an open space as a centre court. However, most of the remaining businesses are on the ground floor, which leaves the upper levels vacant except for the MR. DIY and MBO Cinemas on the second and third floors.

Many netizens reacted to the current state of the Space U8 mall, speaking about the lack of crowd. Some reminisced about visiting the mall, saying it was a great place to watch movies. However, some noted that the lack of crowd may be due to its location and layout.

Many also felt it was a shame for the space to be left to waste, leading them to suggest ways to utilise the mall. Some said the space would be great as a youth hub or a sports hall with an indoor track or a futsal court. Others even suggested renting the mall to television stations as a filming set for entertainment shows.

Maybe the Space U8 management could consider some of these suggestions – but what do you think? Would these recommendations help bring a crowd to the Shah Alam mall?
