If you’re a fan of nasi kandar, you might be familiar with the Nasi Kandar Sulaiman restaurant in Penang. The decades-old restaurant has always been a popular choice amongst foodies – but recently, the brand has been making waves with its unconventional marketing tactic.
Since last year, Nasi Kandar Sulaiman has been holding an unofficial challenge for its customers to see who can make the most expensive nasi kandar order. According to its Facebook page, one Penang man recently topped the list with his nasi kandar order, which cost him a whopping RM222.
The restaurant even did a breakdown of his order, which is as follows: squid: RM7.50 x 16 (RM120), prawn: RM7.50 x 10 (RM75), chicken: RM5.50 x 2 (RM11), squid eggs: RM7, ladyfinger: RM1, rice: RM1.50, (and) lamb: RM7.
The restaurant added that the man voluntarily came to the store to order the pricey meal. The post also included videos of the customer eating his meal, which took 55 minutes to finish. The man is just one of many customers who have been flocking to the restaurant to beat the previous record, which has grown significantly since early January when a man from Johor set the record at RM69.
The post received tons of reaction from netizens, who were impressed by the man’s willingness to beat the record. Some were also surprised that he could finish the entire meal in under an hour. Interestingly, the comments also revealed that the customer is the owner of a Penang burger restaurant, TheFat.Burger, leading many to joke that the Facebook post was to help promote his business as well.
If you’re curious, the second most expensive Nasi Kandar Sulaiman order is RM218. The restaurant also keeps track of the cheapest orders they’ve received, saying they celebrate all their customers regardless of how much they pay.
