Many Malaysians dream of the big stage, and considering that many are K-pop fans, it’s not surprising that many would choose that route to fame. Local influencer Christinna Kuan, a.k.a MsKuan, was recently spotted at an audition for a K-pop girl group – but fans are not pleased with why she’s auditioning.
Singaporean news outlet The Strait Times recently released their coverage of the Singapore auditions for the K-pop girl group Fifty Fifty (피프티 피프티). The audition was to find new members for the group after three members left, citing issues with the management, including mistreatment. Since the start, fans have been critical of the auditions and those who joined were not spared from criticism either.
girl you’re 26 and your reasoning for auditioning for an abusive company is bc you love the song cupid… pic.twitter.com/brQFU2WBt5

Christinna, a well-known influencer, was one of the many applicants for the audition. When interviewed by The Straits Times, the 26-year-old explained she joined the audition because she liked the group’s hit song “Cupid”. While being a fan of the group’s music is a valid reason for wanting to be part of the group, Christinna’s comment did not sit well with K-pop fans, who are aware of the legal dispute between Fifty Fifty and their company, Attrakt.
Many slammed Christinna for wanting to be part of a controversial company solely because she enjoyed the group’s song. As former Fifty Fifty members have spoken about the company’s mistreatment, many K-pop fans said Christinna and the other auditionees should have considered this a red flag. Others also pointed out that Christinna being 26 years old makes her a little too old to be part of a K-pop girl group, but many defended her and said her age shouldn’t be an issue. Some were also concerned that Attrakt might add the influencer into the group to bank on her popularity and fandom.
It is unknown whether Christinna will be part of the girl group as she is still actively promoting as an influencer and singer in Malaysia – but what do you think about her audition? Do you see Christinna as a K-pop idol in the future? Or are there more cons than pros?
