Over the weekend, a man named Faizul Jojoe posted several photos and videos on his Facebook of an incident that took place on the Penang Bridge. The video showed a couple riding on a motorcycle while hitting and (allegedly) attempting to kick other road users, including the uploader himself.
The post went viral with netizens slamming the couple, especially the woman, for their act of endangering other road users. Thankfully, the local authorities have been made aware of the situation and have arrested the individuals in the video.
According to local news, the couple were arrested just a day after the video of them circulated all over social media. Head of the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) Regional Police, Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris told reporters that the wife, who is in her 30s, apparently possesses an OKU card, however, her disability was not specified.
It was reported that both she and her husband (in his 50s) are currently detained for 4 days and that they are being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act. It was also revealed that this was not the first time the couple had trouble with the law as they had 3 past criminal cases but were not on the wanted list.
Not only that, but their marital status is also being investigated as it was said that only the husband has converted to Islam. After the news broke out, netizens were furious as to why many would always pull out the OKU card every time they were caught breaking the law. Some suggested that those with OKU cards should be carefully examined whether or not they are mentally and/or physically well enough to drive.
After looking back at the footage, there were a few who argued that the husband was actually trying to warn others of his wife, suggesting that he was actually using his leg to signal them to keep their distance rather than trying to kick them. At the time of writing, there have been no updates from the police regarding the couple’s statements and punishment.
