Money Lost & No Customers? Netizens Discuss Why This Recent Food Festival In Perlis Was A Failure

Here in Malaysia, food festivals are great for small-time business owners to attract customers and make extra profit. However, since there are numerous food festivals in Malaysia, does participating in one bring more loss to the vendors?

TikTok user Fara Hana recently shared a video showing the state of the Food Kulture Perlis food festival. In her video, Fara speaks about the lack of crowd at the event, held at Dataran Dato Sheikh Ahmad in Kangar from 25th to 30th January. The food vendor laments that the terrible attendance negatively affected the vendors and their businesses as they lost a lot of money from joining the festival.

In her video, Fara showed the many stalls set up at the festival, which included popular foods and restaurants like Damascus. Unfortunately, no customer was seen as the vendor walked around the alleys. Fara revealed that she paid RM500 per day to participate in the event, adding that many vendors had withdrawn and closed their stalls as they couldn’t bear the cost. The vendor mentioned that the event was well-marketed on social media but the public’s attendance was still not up to expectations.

Many netizens have reacted to the video, sharing mixed responses to the vendor’s grievance. Some felt sorry for Fara and the other vendors who lost money due to the failed event. However, many netizens said this is the reality for many food festivals as it has become over saturated. Others added that there was another food festival in the same week, which could have explained the public’s lack of interest. Many also lament that food festivals are often overpriced, which deters many from visiting.

Previously, netizens debated why the quality of food festivals has gone downhill – but what do you think about this situation? Do you agree that food festivals have lost their appeal? Or did the Food Kulture Perlis festival lack proper marketing?
