Malaysian actor Muhammad Shameer Shauqeen Shaiful Izam, a.k.a Meerqeen, is one of the most talked about stars in the country. However, his popularity does come with the downside of being under a microscope – even down to what he wears.
The 23-year-old was recently at the grand opening of the new YSL Beauty boutique at The Exchange TRX. Other stars like model Alicia Amin, influencer Azfar Heri and even K-pop star Mark Tuan (마크투안) were invited to the event on Wednesday (24th January) night. Following the dress code, all the guests dressed in all-black ensembles, including Meerqeen, who appeared in a black satin top from YSL.

However, the get-up did not sit right with some netizens who left unsavoury comments online about Meerqeen’s appearance during the event. Some mocked the actor, saying it looked like he wore a woman’s shirt, given the top featured a large ribbon on the front. Some netizens even said the shirt did not suit Meerqeen and that he should’ve chosen an appropriate outfit for the event.
In an interview with a local news outlet, Meerqeen shared his response to the nasty comments and defended his outfit choice. According to the star, the outfit was part of his work commitment as a guest for the event and the regional brand ambassador for YSL Beauty. He said that as the brand ambassador, it’s only appropriate for him to don pieces from the brand during the event. He also clarified that the outfit was specially prepared for him by the YSL team, so he had to show respect to the client.
He also expressed disappointment over the many criticisms he received from netizens over such a trivial matter. Despite the critics, Meerqeen clarified he’s still grateful for all the opportunities he has received from many luxury brands. He noted that events like the YSL boutique opening inspires him to work harder and be more successful.
On the other hand, many Meerqeen fans praised the star’s appearance from the night, saying that he looked dashing, even alongside an international artist like Mark Tuan.
