Most would do anything to work with renowned filmmaker Stephen Chow (周星馳). But, that’s not the case for actor Bruce Leung (Leung Siu-lung, 梁小龍). According to the Hong Kong actor, he would rather never work with Stephen Chow again!
Bruce Leung once worked with Stephen Chow on the “Kung Fu Hustle (功夫)” films. As it turned out, that was the last time he opted to work with the filmmaker. But, surprisingly, he was recently seen working with someone who looks like Stephen Chow! Needless to say, netizens have questions.
Netizens recently discovered Bruce attending a press conference, allegedly for Fist of Fury 2024 (2024精武門), on 12th January. Someone who looked like Stephen Chow was spotted at the event, as was someone resembling the late Ng Man-Tat (吳孟達). Although the Stephen Chow lookalike wasn’t an exact copy, their similarities were enough for netizens to believe it was really him, at a glance.
Still, while most were aware it wasn’t actually Stephen Chow, several claimed seeing Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung and the Stephen Chow lookalike together at the event was “odd“, even “embarrassing” as just last month, Bruce had declared he did not want to work with Stephen Chow anymore, despite having starred in both “Kung Fu Hustle (功夫)” films.
In the Douyin video posted last December, Bruce shared several issues he had with Stephen. He claimed there was no negotiation over the salary for the “Kung Fu Hustle (功夫)” films, and that he had been paid dismally. Bruce also alleged that Stephen had poked fun at his belly once. In another interview, Bruce stated he hadn’t liked Stephen questioning his martial arts skills, which ended with him knocking Stephen to his knees, literally.
Stephen Chow is allegedly aware of Bruce Leung’s grievances towards him, however he has not responded beyond refuting Bruce’s statement about his pay. Aside from that, the duo are seemingly still on the outs.
Well, while we might never see Bruce Leung and Stephen Chow work together on another film, it’s clear Bruce’s animosity doesn’t extend to the famous director’s lookalikes. Still, we hope he can clear the air with Stephen Chow, eventually.
