Local Man Travelled From Johor To Penang To Order RM69 Nasi Kandar

Nasi kandar is popular for being tasty and cheap, depending on what you choose as your sides, of course. But, this does mean that on occasion, you’ll get discussions over whether what you took is worth the price.

Take this case for instance. Netizens are marveling at this patron who paid RM69 for his meal. It sounds expensive, but when you take into account the fact that his sides are squids and prawn, some think paying RM69 is pretty cheap!

Nasi Kandar Sulaiman uploaded a photo of a plate of rice with squids and prawns on their Facebook on 31st December, claiming a man from Johor had travelled to their branch in Penang and ordered the most expensive meal of 2023. The breakdown of the plate is as follows: “One large squid: RM8, three pieces of squid: RM7.50, four pieces of prawn: RM7.50, mutton: RM7 and rice: RM1.50.”

Netizens have since been puzzling out if the plate is worth RM69. A few opined you could buy the same ingredients and make the meal yourself at home. “It’s cheaper,” one stated. Others joked that only a “rich person” could afford such a meal. “This is the definition of a rich person. Able to take dishes at a nasi kandar store without caring about what others think,” one comment read.

But, there were some who argued that the meal seemed worth it and “cheap”. A few also chose to be peacemakers, reminding netizens that to each their own. “The person who ordered that (travelled) from Johor to Penang. It’s worth it as he came from afar to eat what he wants. And he can afford it,” one chided gently. “Enjoy your new 2024 year with an open mind,” another urged.

Well, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you can afford it and it makes you happy, there’s no harm in occasionally splurging on a meal. What do you guys think? Would you pay RM69 for this nasi kandar meal?
