Just because Christmas is over, doesn’t mean the fun is, as we still have the New Year’s celebration to look forward to. In previous years, many would celebrate the joyous occasion by gathering at KLCC Park to watch the spectacular fireworks display.
Unfortunately for the upcoming New Year’s celebrations, the skies will not be lit up by beautiful pyrotechnics. KLCC released a statement yesterday (Thursday, 28th December) to explain the reason why:
KLCC announced on their official Instagram page to inform the public that there will not be a fireworks display for the New Year’s Eve party. In their statement, they said, “We’ll be bringing in the new year a little differently this year as we stand in solidarity with so many going through unimaginable challenges and difficult times across the globe 🕊️🌏.”
While it was not explicitly mentioned, it’s possible that the statement above was referring to the simultaneous genocide in Palestine, Congo and Sudan. However, it does not mean that there won’t be any kind of light show to bring in the New Year. KLCC also wrote that they encourage visitors to gather at Lake Symphony Fountains as they will be lighting the Petronas Twin Towers at midnight as a “symbol of our shared journey and our hopes for the coming new year”.
Netizens reacted to the announcement with some expressing dissatisfaction. While there were those who appreciated KLCC for being compassionate for the people going through unimaginable atrocities, others felt like this was just an excuse to save money. Some even pointed out that there was no fireworks show last time and criticised the management for the last-minute announcement as many came from afar to watch the iconic light performance.
Although there won’t be any fireworks at KLCC, there are still plenty of countdown events happening in Klang Valley. More info here.
