Yesterday (Wednesday, 27th December), fans were struck by the tragic news of actor Lee Sun-kyun (이선균)’s death. The “Parasite” star was found dead in his car where police also found evidence of lit charcoal briquettes, which suggested that his death may have been a suicide.
Later that evening, it was confirmed that the 48-year-old did indeed leave a suicide letter to his wife and agency before he took his own life. Here’s what he reportedly said in his final note:

Several Korean news outlets revealed parts of the content of Lee Sun-kyun’s letter. There were emotional lines that were addressed to his wife, actress Jeon Hye-Jin (전혜진), where he said, “I can’t do anything anymore. I think this is the only way.” The line was most likely referring to his drug abuse allegation case that has been going on since October earlier this year.
Although he tested negative three times during the drug tests, the late actor was heavily criticised by the public. Due to the ongoing case, he was removed from several upcoming projects. The deceased also apologised to the CEO of his agency, Hodu&U Entertainment, for the penalties they received for his cancelled deals, which was estimated to be around 10 billion won (RM35.8 million).
Lee Sun-kyun’s funeral was held yesterday at Seoul National University Hospital where it was attended by close family and friends. Actors Jung Woo-sung, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Im Si-wan and Ryu Jun-yeol were among the celebrities who attended the funeral. It was reported that his “A Hard Day” co-star, actor Cho Jin-woong, was so overwhelmed with grief during the funeral that he needed to be supported by a friend.

Other Korean stars like actress Claudia Kim, singer Luna of f(x) and Yuri of COOL, all took to Instagram Story to share their thoughts on the late actor’s sudden death and legal case, as well as to offer their condolences and final wishes. As for his drug allegation case, it is scheduled to close with ‘no right to prosecute’ due to his death.
