Being an influencer seems rather glamorous – but many netizens have begun showing more scepticism towards influencers lately because of all their recent scandals. One of them is 19-year-old Nurin Lofa, who garnered attention by showing off her brand-new Mercedes Benz. Nurin claimed that she bought the luxury car with her hard-earned income from being an influencer. However, some netizens were sceptical about the possibility of someone affording an expensive ride at such a young age, so naturally, netizens began digging for dirt on Nurin.
Not long after her post about her new car, netizens discovered that the 19-year-old had previously promoted an app called MZPlay, which is essentially a gambling app. Many believed this to be where most of Nurin’s income came from, as she once mentioned that she purchased expensive items with her “outcome” from using MZPlay. Netizens began condemning her for promoting gambling when it’s haram (forbidden) for her to partake in as a Muslim.

Nurin fought back the comments through an interview with a local news outlet, even saying that those who criticised her would eventually receive their punishment in the afterlife. This comment led to even more backlash from netizens, who started looking up more information about the influencer. Netizens eventually discovered Nurin’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) trial examination results, showing that the influencer did not attend any of her subject papers because they were all marked with TH (Tidak Hadir / Did Not Attend).
While Nurin did attend the actual SPM examination, many began shaming Nurin for neglecting her studies while showing off her wealth as a content creator. Following this, Nurin attempted to speak up about her SPM result, explaining the non-attendance grade on all subjects. According to Nurin, she did attend all her SPM trial papers but not the English oral test, which affected the other subjects.
Of course, netizens did not buy her explanation, even calling her out for trying to lie to the public. One netizen even shared their SPM results to disprove her statement, showing that not attending for one paper will not affect the other subjects. The tweet also led to more disappointment from netizens, saying that the lack of importance towards education is why more influencers are irresponsibly promoting gambling apps for the sake of money.

After getting called out, Nurin has deactivated her Twitter account but remains active on other social platforms. What started as an innocent post snowballed into more hate – but do you think netizens were right to call out Nurin?
