Malaysian singer Queenzy Cheng (莊群施) has captivated many with her talents since young, impressing more with her renditions of Chinese New Year songs. But, 2024 will regretfully be bereft of her music as on 28th November, it was announced that the much loved singer had passed away.
Queenzy Cheng’s passing was revealed on her socials yesterday, allegedly sometime in the evening. The news has since devastated many, as fans and friends have since gathered online to express their condolences and to mourn the loss of a brilliant, bright singer.
The news of Queenzy’s passing was first announced via an official post on her Facebook and Instagram. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Queenzy 莊群施 on November 28, 2023,” it read. “Her musical legacy will forever echo in our hearts, serving as a comforting reminder of the joy she brought to countless lives.”
“Details of the memorial service will be communicated soon. In this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Queenzy’s family, friends, and all those touched by her beautiful melodies,” the post added. Reportedly, Queenzy’s remains will later be transported back to her hometown, Kayangan, Perlis and the funeral ceremony will be held on 2nd December.
Queenzy Cheng’s passing has left many fans and friends in the entertainment sector mourning, including her former M-Girls (四个女生) members. Crystal Ong (王雪晶) has since expressed her grief through her Instagram stories, from a pure black photo to a startling declaration of “I hate you” to a final photo of them together and a promise of, “Silly woman. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Angeline Khoo (邱燕妮) politely told her followers there would be no video from her that night, citing “personal reasons“. Her Instagram Story also showed her travelling, assumedly to Queenzy’s hometown to pay her last respects.
Others too have taken to their socials to pen their goodbyes to the singer, and to offer her tribute in wake of her passing. Host and travel influencer Jason PH (贾森) reminisced her earlier works while musician 罗依尔 and producer Lenny Ooi (黄得伟) both praising her journey and career as a singer.
Fellow singer Nick Chung (钟盛忠) took the time to mourn her passing by recalling times spent with her, while artist Vicky Tan (陈薇芝) and, actress and Astro host Mandy Chen (陳諭) too shared their favourite moments of Queenzy, praising her cheerful and gentle character.
Reportedly, the singer had passed away suddenly while filming for YouTube channel Squad Sekawan around 10.30am. At the time, the 37-year-old singer had just gotten changed when she claimed she felt unwell. “After blow-drying her hair, Queenzy sudddenly sat in a chair and said she felt dizzy, had a headache and felt like vomiting,” fellow actor Chai Zi (蔡子), who had been on set with her, claimed.
She then fell unconscious and was reportedly still breathing, but, Cai Zi added “her heart was beating very fast” and that her extremities had turned blue. An ambulance arrived five minutes after the call was sent out and the staff immediately started performing first aid, however she was soon pronounced dead. According to Sin Chew Daily, the singer allegedly passed away from a brain hemorrhage.
“The whole (duration) from when she said she felt dizzy to when she passed away was only 30 to 40 minutes,” Cai Zi stated. Queenzy had only just finished filming “明星真人秀” on 22nd November, and had been excited to continue filming with Squad Sekawan. Her final Instagram Story caught a moment of the Squad Sekawan crew, with Queenzy looking overjoyed to be there.
Queenzy made her debut in the entertainment scene at the age of 8 after growing up participating in modelling and beauty contests. Her talent was discovered by Yage Enterprises and she was signed on as a child star, which quickly became her road to fame as her love for music blossomed.
Our hearts go out to all who knew the singer, be it personally or have simply been blessed by her songs. We sincerely hope they will find peace in her passing and that Queenzy Cheng’s musical legacy will not be forgotten.
