Pizza toppings can range from the typical pepperoni and mushrooms to the debatable ones like pineapple and olives – but how would you categorise exotic meats? Since the start of November, Pizza Hut in Hong Kong has been serving pizzas topped with snake meat.
The new menu item is a collaboration between Pizza Hut and the iconic snake soup restaurant Ser Wong Fun (蛇王芬), which has been open since 1895. Aptly named the ‘Snake Soup Pizza’ (大吃一驚蛇羹批), the pizza features the flavours and ingredients found in the restaurant’s best-selling soup, including shredded snake meat, black mushrooms and Chinese dried ham.
According to the Pizza Hut Hong Kong & Macao Facebook page, the new pizza is a limited-time offering, only available in Hong Kong until 22nd November. As for the prices of the snake meat pizza, it costs around HK$186 to HK$209, or approximately RM112 to RM125. Apart from the snake meat pie, Pizza Hut is also offering the ‘Double Flavour Preserved Sausage Pizza’ (驚量猛料雙腸批), topped with the less exotic Chinese preserved sausage known as lap cheong.
Netizens have reacted to this unconventional pizza topping, sharing mixed opinions. Understandably, some netizens found the concept and the exotic meat option a bit weird. Others were also curious about the pizza, including one customer who already tried it and even gave a review. Funny enough, a few netizens also shared suggestions for Pizza Hut’s next experimental pizza topping, like natto (fermented soybean) and black bean.
If you’re wondering about snake meat soup, the dish is a traditional Chinese delicacy, mostly consumed for its medicinal value. It is said to be beneficial for blood nourishment, improving skin quality and increasing the consumer’s energy levels. Snake meat soup was very popular in the 1980s but has seen a decline in production in recent years.
For your information, snake meat is not permissible for Muslims to eat – but for those who can consume the meat, would you give it a try?
