A memorable dialogue in a television series can help boost a show’s popularity – or ruin its entire image. For this upcoming drama featuring actress Janna Nick, netizens believe her line in the show was too much, even if it’s fictional.
The backlash started when a Twitter user highlighted a shocking dialogue from an upcoming TV3 production titled “Surat Dari Tuhan” (Letter From God). In the video shared, the show’s lead actress, Janna Nick, could be heard saying to co-star Sheila Mambo, “In front of the tomb of Prophet Muhammad, in front of your face, I’m going to say this: If Rayyan hates me, I will make sure that you will perish on this holy land.”
Rasanya tak boleh kan ‘skrip’ macam ni? Even hanya lakonan dan tak berniat tetap tak boleh kan? Mohon pencerahan. pic.twitter.com/QoprzTrH1m

Unsurprisingly, the dialogue shocked netizens due to its mention of religious matters alongside a harsh action. What made matters worse was that the scene in question was filmed in Mecca, meaning the celeb had spoken the line while in a Muslim holy place. According to the synopsis, Janna portrays the show’s main antagonist, hence the character’s rude behaviour and dialogue. However, netizens said it doesn’t excuse the line or use of a religious topic alongside a crude remark.
Aside from expressing disappointment at the “Mentari Senja” singer for uttering the line, netizens condemned the production team behind the drama, especially the writers. Local preacher Ustazah Asma’ Harun has also reacted to the scene and hopes the production team rectifies the issue. She also urged other local production teams and writers to be wary of creating such scripts for future shows.
Janna Nick has yet to comment about the backlash – but netizens have flooded her Instagram posts with remarks about her dialogue in the drama. While some netizens criticised her and the script, others have advised the actress to watch Ustazah Asma’s video and take the preacher’s advice.
As the drama had just begun airing, it could be that the line was to create tension amongst the characters – but what do you think about the line? Was it too much, or was it necessary?
