Netflix recently launched its latest K-drama series “DOONA!” (이두나!) last Friday (20th October). Based on the popular Webtoon comic, the live-action adaptation tells the tale of an unexpected romance between Lee Doona, a reclusive former K-pop idol, and Lee Won-jun, a grounded university student whose life revolves around tangible realities.
During the press conference, the two main stars of the show, Bae Suzy (배수지) and Yang Se-jong (양세종) shared more about what they think about their characters.
Bae Suzy (as Lee Doona)
Being a former member of K-pop girl group Miss A, Bae Suzy definitely shares some things in common with her character Lee Doona. The singer-actress revealed that being on the show reminded her of her days of being an idol.
“I was attracted to the character of Doona with many scars and I was also reminded of my idol days. I thought that maybe I could express those emotions well. I had high expectations for the chemistry that I could show in the shared house because the cast members were near my age and I thought that ‘it would be fun.
Doona is someone who you can’t really expect what she’s feeling, but I wanted to give her a hug. She believes she knows how to handle things. She would express her feelings to every extent, and she let herself suffer. She lets herself go through all those emotions. So I kind of was envious of her and I could resonate with her in that sense. So that’s why I thought that I wanted to give her a big hug.”
Yang Se-jong (as Lee Won-jun)
Apart from falling in love with the script, 30-year-old actor Yang Se-jong also shared that this may be the last opportunity for him to play a character who is much younger than he is, which is why he decided to jump onboard.
“Won-jun is a perfectly ordinary college freshman with little to no knowledge about the world of idols. He’s in his early 20s, and he has his own responsibilities. I think what both me and the character have in common is the fact that there’s just a lot going on in our minds, except Won-jun is a little bit more naive.
While developing the character, I thought that the most important part would be not to lose the intrinsic purity or the personality of the character until the end of the series. I also tried not to limit the gradual transformations as Won-jun matured due to various circumstances and people around him.”
Other cast members include Apink’s Oh Ha Young (오하영), Lee Jin-uk (이진욱) and Park Se-wan (박세완) so be sure to check everyone out in this newest romance series on Netflix. Watch the trailer below:
